Car show in Detroit yields five WSJ videos

Success Story Videos founder Phil Daquila is back from several days in Detroit, where he was part of The Wall Street Journal‘s coverage of the North American International Auto Show. As an extension of my work with auto columnist Dan Neil in North Carolina, I produced five videos of Dan’s reviews and impressions, ranging from one to six minutes running times. We covered a VW preview party, two Mercedes, a Honda and a notebook with nine vehicles. More than 5,000 journalists were there for the press preview days, and working a large trade show proved great field experience. I am credited as multimedia producer. Please click the WSJ Video Center and select Life & Style > Autos. Or try these direct links for a few videos from the show: Motorama Drama and Honda Civic Concept.

I have been asked to create a new course, COM 562 Interactive Storytelling, which is an exciting opportunity. It will be a production course for 25 master’s students in the Interactive Media program eager to create polished portfolio pieces. Phil Daquila and Chris Carmichael completed post-production this summer on the documentary-style short profiles for the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School. It was a treat to work with the marketing communications department at Kenan-Flagler (and Anthony, Jen, Michel and Zac) and we hope that prospective applicants to the program make these stories viral! The four new videos are featured at the top of the page.

Project Spirit Sight

Success Story Videos founder Phil Daquila completed post-production on an eight-minute video story about a young humanitarian in Durham, N.C., who planned a service project that started with a violin recital and ended triumphantly in southern India. Project Spirit Sight raised donations of both money and used eyeglasses to help with eye camps in two rural villages around Tiruvannamalai, India. Rasika Rajagopalan and her mother traveled to these villages to assist Aravind Eye Hospital and local volunteer organizations in spreading the word and bringing people to the free clinics to receive treatment.

I shot the North Carolina portions (recital, packing and interviews) and Siva’s Video shot the superb India material, following Rasika and Usha’s efforts and the patients’ journeys. A success story indeed!

Elon University School of Communications

Success Story Videos founder Phil Daquila has joined the faculty of the Elon University School of Communications and will teach Media Writing and two sections of Web Publishing in the fall semester; classes start Tue, Aug. 31. As a result of teaching audio and video for the web at UNC-Chapel Hill while completing my master’s degree, I discovered my love for sharing the craft with others. I am grateful for this opportunity to start my career as a professor. In July The Chronicle of Higher Education named Elon to its list of 97 great colleges to work for. The School posted this news item announcing my start along with six other new colleagues.

If you have any questions about Elon and my role there or suggestions for a newcomer to writing syllabi, please drop me a note or call [919] 641-8745. My freelance work with Success Story Videos will continue as my professional activity, and I welcome learning about your video storytelling needs.

Success Story Videos founder Phil Daquila has been contracted by The Wall Street Journal (wsj.com) to produce video reports for the site. Initial assignments have been to shoot and edit segments that accompany the writing of Raleigh-based auto columnist Dan Neil. Phil also has been invited to pitch non-automotive reports so if you have ideas that you believe may appeal to the WSJ audience and can be shot in NC, please drop me a line or call [919] 641-8745.
